Evidence Based Approach

As understandings of addiction and addiction recovery change, we constantly work to bring best practices into our treatment protocol. We recognize that not every treatment works for every person, so we use our resources carefully to gain access to all the latest therapies available. No two addictions are the same, no two circumstances are the same and no two people are the same. This means that no two addiction treatment should be the same, and everyone has an individualized plan using different main therapies that are available.

With all treatment plans that are developed, evidence-based practices are used. This means that our treatments are scientifically proven to produce positive results. Choosing individual treatment activities combines individual clinical experience with the treatments, scientific studies on the efficacy of treatment, and client expectations for treatment. In short, we stay up-to-date to give you the best of the best. An evidence-based approach constantly looks at new research, studies and re-evaluates practice based on findings.

Comfortable Detox

Upon entering Cliffside Malibu, one of the first treatments a client receives is detox. We work hard to make sure that detox is as comfortable as possible for the client, so that they can focus more clearly on therapy.

Detoxing alone is dangerous. We have a medical staff onsite 24/7 to assist with any side effects or discomfort experience during detox. This can include medications to easy any withdrawal symptoms, or psychiatric help get you through it emotionally. Being able to eliminate any distractions or stressors during addiction treatment, including uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms, is something we take seriously.

Dialect Behavior Therapy

One of the main therapies used at Cliffside Malibu to help you on your journey to a person with substance use disorderion-free life is Dialectical Behavior Treatment (DBT). People experiencing addiction recovery have a lot of emotions that arise. Most of these emotions have been suppressed or numbed with substance abuse. Using substances is a way for people to avoid having to deal with their emotions .DBT provides patients with new new tools for managing these painful emotions in the future, without having to turn to substance abuse..

DBT is focused on providing these new skills in 4 distinct key areas:

  1. Mindfulness focus: Increasing the person’s perception and acceptance in their current mood.
  2. Distress Tolerance: Increasing the patient’s ability to tolerate negative emotion, rather than running from it or avoiding it, in an attempt to escape. This need to escape is what can often lead to addiction, so learning new skills in this area is key to recovery.
  3. Regulation: Learning how to regulate the emotion or emotions that are causings problems, and the management of these. What are your triggers? How are you going to recognize them in the future, and when you do, how are you going to keep yourself in check?
  4. Interpersonal effectiveness: Using techniques to speak more assertive, maintaining self respect and build on strengthening relationships.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

In addition to DBT, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBD) is one of the main therapies used to help get to lasting recovery. CBD is a short-term behavioral psychotherapy used as a hands-on approach to re-teach patients problem-solving as well as changing the patterns of behavior and thinking that lead to a patient’s difficulties. It helps change the client’s reactions toward certain emotional patterns, and how their thought process plays a part.

CBT can be seen as a combination of both psychotherapy and behavioral therapy. This is because psychotherapy teaches the importance of how thinking patterns develop as a child. Behavioral therapy pays attention to the relationship between our problems, our behaviors and thoughts. CBT works to address how negative thinking patterns determine our actions.

Holistic Therapy

In addition to the above evidence-based therapies, Cliffside Malibu uses holistic therapies as well. Holistic therapy aims to bring the mind, body and spirit into alignment. It focuses on the patient’s overall well-being, while also treating physical symptoms of addiction and withdrawal.

When someone enters treatment for addiction, many things are out of whack. This can include sleeping patterns, eating patterns, weight gain, weight loss, emotional stress, anxiety, lack of exercise and much more. Holistic therapy aims to work on these factors.

Holistic therapy is very beneficial to addiction treatment because it is a healthy, positive outlet to use in place of substance abuse. Being more in-tune with one’s body and mind can help immensely during addiction recovery. Clients are better able to recognize negative thought patterns and turn to holistic therapy to rid themselves of these negative thoughts.

Some examples of holistic therapy include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Massage therapy
  • Meditation
  • Nutritional education
  • Yoga
  • Equine therapy
