The Stages of Change

A blue graphic with the Stages of Change model in the center. The stages of change model is laid out like a compass, this multi-staged process begins with complete denial or lack of awareness that a problem even exists, to an ultimate transcendence of the problem so that it truly is no longer part of your life.

A pair of researchers, Prochaska and DiClemente, at the University of Rhode Island illustrated how those seeking to recover from addiction go through a series of “stages” that allowed them ultimately to transcend their addictions and maintain sobriety. Their model is aptly called “The Stages of Change”, a non-12-step program.

The staff of Cliffside Malibu was personally trained by Prochaska on this powerful treatment model. It is the hallmark of our treatment program.

Critical to your success in moving through the Stages of Change is your work with your personal therapist. Unlike at other treatment centers, we provide one therapist with whom you will consistently meet. This person will lead you through the Stages of Change and arrange for you the associated therapies and activities that will best support you in the recovery process. Your therapist will meet you where you are, gradually encouraging you and helping you as you chart the course of real, long lasting, meaningful change.

Cliffside Malibu - Support

The Stages of Change model addresses an issue of fundamental importance to lasting recovery – meeting a person with substance use disorder where he is at that point in time and then moving him through the process of becoming willing, then able to make the changes he seeks. This multi-staged process begins with complete denial or lack of awareness that a problem even exists, to an ultimate transcendence of the problem so that it truly is no longer part of your life.

At Cliffside Malibu, we base our individualized treatment plans on the non-12-step program known as the Stages of Change model. This means that we meet you where you are mentally, physically, and spiritually, helping you to overcome the deep-rooted issues that have caused your addiction to flourish. Utilizing a carefully selected array of therapies and incorporating The Stages of Change model throughout your program means you will have one of the best cutting-edge, evidence-based treatment experiences you can possibly find anywhere in the world.
