When you’re depressed, you don’t feel good and you don’t really want to do much of anything. You might be unable to get out of bed. You might find yourself crying often. Most of all, you wish for a return to the days when you had more energy and more hope. If you have a dual diagnosis, you know that your depression is being fueled by your drug or alcohol addiction, but you don’t know what to do to help yourself. You’re afraid that if you stop using, not only will you have terrible withdrawal symptoms, but the symptoms of your depression might worsen. If you are taking medication for your depression, it could be interacting with other drugs or alcohol that you use, putting you in danger of accidental overdose. The thought of dying might not scare you at all, but rather seem like relief. We understand and we can help.
Good depression treatment will have two parts:
- Whole Health Treatments: These include helping you to do the things that seem too difficult to do on your own – improving your diet, exercising, talking with a professional about your depression in a safe, loving environment.
- Biochemical Evaluation: Your brain chemistry will be examined to see if there are biomedical interventions that need to be introduced to help ease your depression. Dual diagnosis treatment will also include a component to treat your drug or alcohol addiction.
Holistic Depression Treatment
Perhaps the most critical aspect of depression treatment is to provide a supportive environment in which a person can recover. Cliffside Malibu is a luxurious facility – with high quality linens to cocoon you in warmth and areas for privacy when you really do need to be alone. You can spend time in one of our beautiful gardens, relax by the swimming pool, or gaze out at the white-cap views of the ocean from our veranda. At the same time, you will not be isolated. You will be cared for by a team of professionals who are interested in your health – your whole health – and who will work with you toward complete recovery.
You will be given access to a tremendous array of complementary, holistic treatments such as:
- Acupuncture, which lifts the spirit and calms anxiety
- Massage to ease the distress of muscles and the sympathetic nervous system.
- Walks and hikes on the beach
- Restorative yoga
- Equine therapy, which can help develop trust where it has been lost
Your meals will be prepared by a chef. They will be healthy, suited to your tastes, and served in a beautiful dining room where you can eat with friends. You will regularly meet with a dedicated therapist who will help you work through the causes of your depression, so that you can overcome it for good. You will have the opportunity to meditate or develop a spiritual practice of your choosing. Your entire day will be spent in the practice of good health, improving the condition of your mind, body, and spirit.
Chemical Depression Treatment
Modern medical science has taught us that when we are depressed, the brain can become chemically imbalanced. This imbalance could be the cause or the result of the depression. Either way, one of the ways to help someone suffering from depression is to have brain chemistry evaluated.
If brain chemistry has become imbalanced, there are a host of natural herbal and pharmaceutical medications that may be useful to restore brain chemistry to proper balance. These interventions, along with a holistic health regimen, are available through our depression treatment program.
You, along with your personal physician, will discuss treatment options and decide on an individualized treatment plan. If you have a dual diagnosis and suffer from chemical dependency or alcoholism in addition to your depression, your plan will also include integrated treatment for addiction.
