Alcohol Versus Marijuana: Is Either “Safe”?

The controversy surrounding the legalization of marijuana has grown over the years and general public opinion is shifting toward acceptance. Many people know the dangers of alcohol abuse and addiction, but few believe that marijuana causes much harm.  Even President Obama views it as a bad habit similar to cigarettes. Obama has acknowledged saying,

“I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol.”

This sentiment is widespread in our nation, but popularity is not a good reason to legalize the recreational use of a substance that has had limited research about the effects of its use. What we do know about each of these drugs should cause us to ponder if either is safe.

Marijuana

Marijuana was illegal for recreational use in all states until January 1, 2014, when Colorado became the first state to legalize it, although it remains illegal under Federal law.  The Drug Enforcement Agency classifies marijuana as a Schedule 1 substance along with heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, and LSD, meaning that it views marijuana as dangerous and having no medical value. Among people who have used marijuana, it is estimated 9% will become addicted, though that number jumps to one in six if marijuana is used as a teen. One study found that up to three hours after use, people driving were twice as likely to cause an accident.

According to CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta:

“There is clear evidence that in some people, marijuana use can lead to withdrawal symptoms, including insomnia, anxiety and nausea.”

“Even considering this, it is hard to make a case that it has a high potential for abuse. The physical symptoms of marijuana addiction are nothing like those of the other drugs I’ve mentioned.”

Alcohol

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism claims the most commonly abused addictive substance in the nation is alcohol, and yet it is legal for anyone over the age of 21.  Studies show one in 12 adults deal with an alcohol problem. Excessive alcohol drinking results in the deaths of about 88,000 people yearly. Alcohol poisoning, or overdoses, cause an average of 1,600 deaths every year.

The answer to the question of whether alcohol and marijuana are safe to use recreationally is a complicated one. The quick answer is neither is healthy for most people, but used in moderate amounts, infrequently, by adults over the age of 25, either can be an enjoyable indulgence.  It is suggested you talk to a health care professional about any questions or concerns you may have about either alcohol or marijuana use, especially if you have health issues or take prescription medications.
