Marijuana Detox

When Smoking Marijuana Starts at a Young Age

You may have had your first exposure to marijuana in a middle school or high school social setting. Whether it was curiosity, peer pressure or wanting to experience the “high” you’d heard about, you took a long draw off a bong/water pipe,  ingested a marijuana-laced brownie or took a hit or two of a joint. That first experience was many years ago. Now you are well out of high school and still relying on marijuana to handle the stresses of everyday life.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse research indicates that 1 in 6 teens who use marijuana occasionally in high school become addicted. The figure rises to 25 to 50 percent if marijuana is smoked daily in high school.

Smoking After Adolencesne

You may have missed smoking in high school, perhaps even in college. You may have been an adult offered a “recreational drug” in a social setting. What harm could there be?  After all, marijuana has been legalized for medicinal use in some states. You tried it, you liked it and you continue to use it. What started as something that helped you relax in social settings has morphed into your default mechanism to handle life’s stresses.

Marijuana Use Affects Your Health

Marijuana users suffer many of the same ill-effects as tobacco users. Respiratory illness is common. Some people develop a daily cough and experience an increase in phlegm.

One study has shown that you have a 4.8 fold increase of having a heart attack within an hour of smoking. This is because marijuana raises your heart rate 20 to 100 percent within an hour of smoking and can have an effect on heart rhythms causing palpitations and arrhythmias. The risk may be greater if you are older or suffer from cardiac problems.

There may be a link between regular marijuana use and mental illness. Temporary psychotic reactions such as hallucinations and paranoia may occur and with continued use, may contribute to the development of psychosis.
