Cliffside Malibu - Gentle Waves Coming Ashore

How to Choose a Rehab

Here’s a sampling of questions every treatment center should be able to answer in order to help you make your treatment choice.

1.

Do you track your clients’ recovery?

Yes. Our treatment program is dedicated to transitioning our clients through each level of care, until they return to their daily lives, healthy and happy.

2.

What treatment model do you use?

We use a series of evidence-based treatments to create customized treatment plans tailored to each individual.

3.

Is your treatment evidence-based?

Yes.  Evidence-based treatment protocols are proven to be effective.

4.

Are your programs individualized?

Yes.  If you had heart disease, you would expect to get individualized treatment for the exact condition that you had. Addiction treatment is no different. Beware of treatment centers that offer a “one size fits all” approach.

5.

Are your therapies holistic?

Yes. In addition to quality psychological counseling, the body and spirit must also be addressed for healing to be complete.

6.

What is the amount of time I’ll need in treatment to recover?

Many treatment centers attempt to undersell you or minimize the amount of care you’ll need. The clinical research, along with our experience, is that most people require 90-120 days of treatment. This is not always the case, but the general rule.

7.

How long have you been in business?

Cliffside Malibu was founded in 2004.

8.

What is the average number of times people are treated in your facility?

Treatment should not be a revolving door. If a person has to attend a treatment center more than twice, it isn’t helping and the person should be referred elsewhere.

9.

What is the cost of treatment? Can you help me find out what my insurance will pay?

While it is possible that some incidentals may arise that are not included in the program’s treatment costs, such as medicines prescribed by your personal physician, you should be able to get a very good upfront idea of the costs during your intake call. If your insurance covers addiction treatment (most insurance does not cover much, if anything, beyond detox), the treatment center should help you negotiate with the insurance.

10.

What is the after-care program in which I will be involved?

All treatment programs offer some sort of aftercare, but you should be involved in a quality aftercare program that is as rigorous and supportive as what you received in treatment. A wave and admonishment to “go to meetings” is not a quality aftercare program.
