This is the third part of a 3-part series on depression. This post looks at treatment options for depression.
In previous posts in this series, we have looked at diet, exercise, and the possible use of medication to control depression symptoms. Here are more treatment options to consider.
Treatment Options for Depression
•    Talk therapy. Talk therapy is an extremely effective treatment for depression. Therapy gives you tools to treat depression from a variety of angles. What you learn in therapy gives you skills and insight to help prevent depression from coming back or worsening. Three of the more common methods used in depression treatment include cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. Often, a blended approach is used.
•    Vitamins/supplements. If your depression symptoms are in part due to nutritional deficiency, you may benefit from vitamin supplements; the supplements you require should be chosen on the advice of your healthcare professional. If you decide to try natural and herbal supplements, remember that they can have side effects and drug or food interactions. Naturopathic doctors and acupuncturists are well known to give supplements or have patients make dietary changes to treat depression. Make sure your doctor or therapist knows what you are taking.
•    Relaxation Techniques. These may include yoga, deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or meditation. Relaxation exercises help take your mind off the negative feedback loop many depressed people experience and can quiet your nerves if you experience fluctuations between depression and anxiety.
•    Acupuncture. Acupuncture, the technique of using fine needles on specific points on the body for therapeutic purposes, is increasingly being investigated as a treatment for depression, with some research studies showing promising results. Traditional Chinese Medicine uses acupuncture most often as a preventative measure, but many depression patients are finding relief through this ancient technique. If you decide to try acupuncture, make sure that you find a licensed qualified professional whose main area of training is acupuncture.

Finding the best combination of treatment techniques blended for you and your own depression is the best way to address your healing. Inpatient Malibu depression treatment can help you find this right path.
