Kefir Aids Digestion
One of the ways we help people in treatment to recover is to provide them with a healthy diet, rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Of course, we all benefit from a balanced diet! Here’s one healthy way to start your day, kickstart your metabolism, and improve your health – a kefir breakfast smoothie.
This smoothie uses Kefir, which is fermented milk with the consistency of drinkable yogurt. Because it contains naturally occurring bacteria and yeast that aid digestion, Kefir is an excellent probiotic. Plus, this superfood is packed with protein, essential minerals, and valuable B vitamins. If you’re lactose intolerant, kefir may be your friend. A study conducted at Ohio State University reported that lactose intolerant individuals experienced few or no symptoms after consuming Kefir.
You’ll find Kefir in the dairy section of most supermarkets. It comes plain and unsweetened or with natural fruit flavorings.
- 1 ½ cups Kefir
- 1 scoop whey powder (plain, vanilla or chocolate flavored)
- 1 tbsp ground flax seed
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- ½ cup frozen or fresh fruit
- Cinnamon, nutmeg and/or cardamom to taste
If you don’t have Kefir on hand, this smoothie can be made with cow’s milk, yogurt, Greek yogurt, almond milk, or soy milk.
Use frozen fruit rather than ice. When bananas turn brown, freeze them in baggies. You can purchase pre-packaged frozen fruit in the freezer section of most supermarkets.
