Dear Cliffside Malibu
I had begun to think that no one understood depression until I sought treatment at Cliffside Malibu. Actually, I don’t think I understood depression until that point either. From my perspective, I was tired all the time, didn’t real care about things and would rather spend my days sleeping than getting up and getting dressed –or going to work. Apparently my friends found me irritable, moody and lazy. They kept bugging me to “get my act together,” or just “smile.” Like smiling would actually make everything better. The counselor I spoke to at Cliffside Malibu quickly concluded that I was suffering from a clinical depression and follow-up assessments confirmed that diagnosis, so I went into the depression treatment program. Therapy went very well and the staff were all extremely supportive. I’ve never ridden horses before this and for some reason I found the horseback riding especially therapeutic. I was worried that the counseling with my family would be weird, but it turned out to be really informative- they’re now a great support group to me. You have a great team in the depression treatment center and a lovely residence. Thanks for helping me through a rough patch.

Dear Cliffside Malibu,
I think your help line likely saved my life one night. I’m the poster child for clinical depression and I’ve been treated for it several times in the past, but nothing seemed to help. I hit a real low one night, the kind of low that can end really badly, if you know what I mean… I thought about just chugging a whole bottle of sleeping pills and just going to sleep, but someone had taped a note with your telephone number on the medicine cabinet. I’m not sure why I called, but the counselor I spoke to talked me out of doing anything stupid, and immediately put me through to a therapist. I ended up checking in to Cliffside Malibu the next day, but if you didn’t have that help line available, I might have checked out that night instead.
