Yoga

Monday, July 30th, 2007

At Cliffside Malibu, we use yoga as an important tool in reshaping the body, mind and soul of our residents. It is used both as a physical exercise and as a spiritual exercise in mediation, thus enhancing the body and the spirit. Many clients find that yoga is an effective technique for coping with stresses that might otherwise lead to drugs or alcohol. Our yoga instructor stretches your muscles and your soul, resulting in a healthier body, more focused thinking, and less stress.

We encourage residents to maintain a yoga regiment when their time at Cliffside is done. Regular yoga exercises and meditation offer lower blood pressure and permanent stress reduction - two very important considerations for the newly recovered.

Insight Oriented Therapy

Cliffside Malibu Alcohol Rehab Program

Insight-Oriented Therapy helps the individual understand how patterns that are repeated in adult life actually have a genesis in their formative years. Many people question why they are inclined to enter unhealthy relationships and situations with the expectation of a different outcome. Cycles of repetition are a hallmark feature in people who have problems with drugs/alcohol. In a nonjudgmental environment our therapists guide individuals in a variety of forums—individual, group, art, and equine—in a process of illumination of the causes of these old patterns, essentially making what was unconscious conscious. By helping individuals become aware of these underpinnings they have more freedom to make healthier choices for themselves.

Cocaine Detox

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

The process of cocaine detox has no specific physical, medical procedure
for treatment. Since, cocaine, a derivative of the South American Coca
plant, is water soluble, it is passed through the body very quickly.
Because it passes through the body very rapidly, and the effects are not
long lasting (10-60 minutes) the user may experience, or have developed
a physical need, but usually craves another dose because of a strong
mental compulsion. As a result, cocaine detox deals with the physical
aspect first, but is more focused on the psychological side of
treatment.

In the initial stages of cocaine detox, physical dependency, and any
immediate physical conditions resulting from the effects of heavy, or
binge use, such as going days without sleep, and not eating for days at
a time, are treated. Symptoms of physical dependency during cocaine
detox, or “withdrawal” usually last up to a week. The patient is closely
monitored and attended to during this time, and any further physical
issues addressed.

The patient typically experiences psychological symptoms like
depression, and anxiety as well, during the first stages of withdrawal.
It is during this part of cocaine detox, that treatment for
psychological dependency, is also applied. Treatment for mental
dependency continues even after the issue of physical dependency has
been resolved. The physical need may be gone, but the mental obsession
may never completely go away.

The treatment administered during cocaine detox is just the first step.
At the conclusion of cocaine detox, enrollment in a drug rehabilitation
program is advisable. Further treatment, and counseling are necessary in
almost all cases to ensure a successful recovery.
