Core Groups Core groups are designed to provide residents with a thorough education regarding their adddiction. Each group therapy session lasts ninety minutes, and is utilized as a learning platform from which residents become educated on various aspects of their disease. Common educational topics include early recovery skills, relapse prevention, co-occurring disorders, relationships in recovery, family systems, triggers, body chemistry and others. Other softer topics such as healthy lifestyles, stress reduction, “one day at a time”, and thought-stopping techniques are frequently covered.
The core group therapy program schedule is designed to deliver all relevant educational material during the course of the typical 30 day residential stay. Core groups (or other educational components) are delivered each morning, followed by a process group in the afternoon. Patients are not encouraged to process during the morning core group and instead are encouraged to process relevant material from the morning group/activity in the afternoon process group.
Process Groups Cliffside’s process groups are designed as an open forum during which residents have the opportunity to process any issues and feelings relevant to recovery. While the group leader facilitates group process, content is driven by the needs and desires of residents. Process group is a forum where patients can discuss personal material, and group therapy program facilitators may also bring in simple topics to be discussed. Examples of these simple topics include anger, fear, forgiveness, gratitude and others related to recovery.

Substance abuse is such a common problem, that there are many alcohol and drug recovery related resources widely available. Actual long-term help can come in many forms from medical and holistic therapies, to highly effective drug recovery centers, and sometimes group counseling and the extremely rare cases of self-imposed withdrawal. The key is not just to find a fast drug recovery method, but also a healthy and safe one.
In most cases, some drug recovery centers will examine the patient’s diet and nutritional needs in addition to the specifics of the drug abuse itself. This way, the body can be primed for a sound transition to a healthier state. When the body is feeling better, it tends to need less of the substitutes that addictive behavior represents.
More information is at your fingertips, as well as immediate care. 24 hours a day, a specialist is available to introduce you to one of the best drug recovery centers in the world. Call us today to begin. 800-501-1988

Cocaine is one of the oldest and most dangerous of the addictive drugs
illicitly manufactured and sold in the world today. Cocaine is an
alkaloid substance found in the leaves of a South American shrub
scientifically known as Erythroxylon Coca, or more famously as the Coca
plant. In it’s powdered form it is usually ingested by snorting, as it
is easily absorbed through the mucous membrane. The crystalline form of
cocaine known as “rock” or “crack” is ingested by heating the cocaine
and inhaling the vapors. Both forms of cocaine provide feelings of
euphoria, hyperstimulation, reduced fatigue, and mental alertness in
their users. The amount used and method of administration determine the
duration and intensity of these effects.
Cocaine is a strong stimulant that effects the central nervous system by
blocking Dopamine, a chemical believed to be associated with the
pleasure system of the brain. This buildup of dopamine causes increased
and continuous stimulation of the receiving neurons creating the
euphoric “high” experienced by it’s users. The increased sense of well
being and intense state of euphoria are short lived and require frequent
ingestion to maintain. Physical symptoms of cocaine use include dilated
pupils, constricted blood vessels, and increases in body temperature,
heart rate, and blood pressure. Additionally, when mixed with alcohol,
the resulting chemical reaction creates a third substance, cocaethylene
in the human liver. This chemical combination intensifies cocaine’s
euphoric effects as well as increasing the risk of sudden death.
The abuse or heavy use of cocaine, as well as method of ingestion, can
lead to other serious health issues as well. Snorting cocaine can over
time lead to nosebleeds, problems with swallowing, hoarseness, loss of
the sense of smell, and a chronically runny nose. The injection of
cocaine directly into the vein can lead to severe allergic reactions,
collapsed veins, and the risk of HIV or Hepatitis-C. Bowel gangrene as a
result of poor blood flow may also result.
The longstanding abuse of cocaine, and the related epidemic of “crack”
has spurred renewed efforts to develop newer, more effective treatment
methods for cocaine abuse. NIDA, or the National Institute on Drug
Abuse, specifically has researchers working to find a medication to
prevent or reduce the effects of cocaine, and a medication to help
alleviate craving that people in treatment for cocaine addiction
experience during withdrawal. Researchers are also studying new methods
of behavioral treatment and therapy that can be effective in reducing
drug use by patients in treatment for cocaine abuse as well. It is their
hope that one day the beast that is cocaine addiction can be tamed.

Most people will tell you that alcoholism can be treated solely by engaging in group meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous. Alcoholics have many options when it comes time to drink. Alcohol is
legal in the USA, and readily available in bars, restaurants,
supermarkets, and liquor stores, to anyone over 21 years of age in most
states. It is advertised on TV, in magazines, and public events. The
fact that drinking is considered socially acceptable, and even viewed as
a fun way to socialize, no doubt contributes to the high number of
alcoholics in the United States today.
Alcoholism is one of the most deadly diseases on the planet. In the U.S.
Alone, an estimated 7% of the population; or 13 million Americans, have
a drinking problem. Of this 7%, 8 million are considered alcoholics.
Two-thirds of the adult population of the United States consume alcohol,
and amazingly, of all the alcohol consumed, half can accounted for by
only 10% of drinkers. 3.1 million people, or approximately 1.4% of the
population received treatment for alcoholism and alcohol-related
problems in 1997.
Alcoholics also have one of the largest support groups to help them deal
with their disease, AA, or Alcoholics Anonymous. With groups meeting in
just about every major city, and several more in suburban, and rural
areas, AA tries to insure there is always a place for the alcoholic to
get help. Through the assistance of groups such as AA, and
professionally staffed detox, and rehab centers, alcoholics can find an
option that suits their needs.

There is an old saying you might hear among recovering alcoholics:
“one drink is too many, a thousand is never enough”. It is a reminder
that alcohol is a seductive enemy, offering comfort and happiness at
first, but eventually showing it’s true colors as the destroyer it
really is. It is also a warning that the path to alcoholic recovery is a
long and unknown road paved with temptation.
For the individual who has admitted to being an alcoholic, who has
reached rock bottom, an alcoholic recovery program such as AA may
provide a new beginning. Groups such as AA and the Salvation Army have
been a huge asset in the process of alcoholic recovery and treatment.
Through the assistance of groups such as these, the alcoholic in need
can find the necessary tools to rebuild their life, and the support
necessary to stay sober for life.
Even with the assistance of the aforementioned support groups, and
especially in the case of the full blown alcoholic, the alcoholic
recovery process usually begins officially, with enrollment in some kind
of detoxification and treatment program. Professional medical assistance
and admittance to a hospital are usually necessary during the
detoxification process as most alcoholics often experience physical
symptoms such as nausea, cramps, and anxiety during the early stages of
withdrawal. Close medical and psychiatric supervision is needed as
well during the early stages of alcoholic recovery and treatment. The
process of treatment for alcoholic recovery doesn’t necessarily mean
enrollment in a detox or inpatient facility, for those in the early
stages of alcoholism, or those who are still leading somewhat normal
lives even while drinking, such as in the case of functioning
alcoholics, outpatient programs are available as well.
There are many paths to alcoholic recovery, but they all lead to the
same place: sobriety.

Addiction can take many forms. Gambling, sex, drugs, anything can be
considered an addiction if abused and can become a destructive obsession
if left unchecked. The effects of addiction can be as
deadly as the worst disease as in the case of hardcore drug abuse, or
damaging to one’s social and work life as is the case with hardcore
gambling or sex addiction. For each person addiction is different even
though the stimulant of choice or behavior may be the same. Each
addiction must be addressed according to the individual involved so a
proper plan of treatment can be instituted.
Make no mistake, an addiction is an illness, and like most
illnesses can be cured with proper treatment. With the expert assistance
of doctors, councilors, and physical therapists, addiction can be
treated. Cliffside Malibu offers the services of such professionals and
more. Our experienced staff which even includes professional chefs and yoga
instructors are here to help aid you during recovery. Our dedicated
resident staff are available 24/7 to assist you and your loved ones,

assistance. A peaceful environment is also conducive to the treatment of
addiction and unlike the hospital like conditions of other rehabs, we
have luxurious living quarters with modern amenities like plasma TVs
and wireless Internet. We combine that with tranquil, natural surroundings
to create a pleasant rehabilitation experience. With our help
you will soon be back to your family and friends living the life you
deserve, free from the chains of addiction.

For most people with a substance abuse problem, the road to addiction recovery can be long. For most, it involves acknowledging the fact that they need help and acting on the desire to get help. Once admitted to a treatment center, most clients go through a detoxification process and then get to work on their recovery. Addiction recovery is not easy, but it can be done. For many people, it is just a matter of finding an addiction recovery program that clicks with them. With the many different programs available, this is not the hard part of addiction treatment.
People who have made this addiction recovery journey often find it challenging to go back out into the world without their substance of choice to help them cope. A large part of addiction recovery is a lifelong desire to be free of the substance so that they can find a good job, get a home, have a family and obtain the kind of life they would like to have. A treatment center that has given a client the tools to accomplish these goals after their addiction recovery is the kind of treatment center that anyone should be looking for.
There are many parts to addiction recovery. Many of these include treatment with medication, alternative treatments and holistic approaches and various types of therapy. But while excellent primary care is vital to addiction recovery, so is an extended treatment plan that offers additional support and help so that the client does not end up turning to drugs or alcohol in times of stress. Stressful events are a part of life, and teaching clients lifelong coping tools that are healthy and effective should be one of the things that every addiction recovery program does.
Cliffside Malibu is one of those addiction recovery programs that gives clients all the tools they need for success. The treatment process at Cliffside Malibu covers the entire spectrum of options. For an addict, life is an unending quest to feel better. And often, a fruitless pursuit of a way to achieve that quest. Addicts are told they’re helpless, useless, lazy, selfish. When they are given recovery options, it’s often court-ordered. They are told by well-meaning family and friends to “just quit”. To “be strong”. They are targets of long-winded speeches regarding the costs of their addiction, lists of what their addiction takes from their loved ones as well as themselves, and predictions of the doom that the addiction holds in store for them. All of these things are true, but in themselves are not enough to enable the addict to achieve recovery.
When they are given more well-grounded options, they’re often given one drug to wean them free from the grip of a worse one. They attend NA meetings, enter a “detox” program, switch to a “milder” drug, or a combination of all of these. And in a majority of cases, fail. Which brings about the repeat of the whole addiction cycle. Because without a clear focus on all aspects of their addiction, these methods are rarely successful for the addict, and most often just frustrating to both the addicts and those who love them. It’s easy to see why most admitted addicts despair of recovery!
Recovery requires more than just one or two of these options. It requires a treatment plan which is tailored to the individual addict. One which focuses on all levels of addiction: physical, mental, and emotional.
-Physical: Withdrawal from the chemical addicted to, treatment of the malnutrition that often accompanies addiction (characterized by loss or impaired use by the body of vitamins and minerals required by the body for proper functioning), treatment of illnesses or injuries caused by the addiction, and return back to proper eating, sleeping, and exercise routines necessary for a healthy body.
-Mental: Education about the effects on the body of the chemical addicted to. Education on coping skills, trigger recognition, patterns of addictive behavior, and skills necessary to a successful and continued recovery. Helping the addict recognize and get treatment for the underlying causes of the addiction.
-Emotional: Rebuilding of the pride, confidence, sense of worth, respect, capability, and trust that addicts generally lose while in the grip of their drug of choice. Empowering the addict by giving them the control and the choice in the success of their recovery process. The understanding for an addicts recovery issues and challenges, and the support to help the addict face those challenges and overcome them.
The most successful recovery from any addiction is one that is built around the individual addict and focuses on each of these levels. By paying attention to the needs of the individual addict the treatment can build supports and strategies to overcome the difficult parts of the recovery process, while reinforcing the strengths the addict already possesses.
There is hope for recovery from addiction. Recovery is an achievable goal. Life can be reclaimed with effort, understanding, and a comprehensive and complete drug treatment plan.
